Tascam: The Tascam is another was to get sound for your films but with the tascam it's very simple and the sound is great. The two little nobs at the top of the are called the "internal" mics. If you want to use something such as an actual microphone or lav mic you use the plugs at the bottom as the "external" mics. To turn it on you hold down the square with the words "home" above it. Once you turn it on you can use the buttons on the side to adjust the volume of what your according - you want to be in about the 3/4 range. From there you press the red circle with the word "recording" above and when its blinking IT IS NOT RECORDING YET! You need to press that button again to actually start recording.
* make sure you stop recording before you take out the sim card*

Sound Production: The sound department on a set tends to about a crew of 2-3 people. Within that crew is the head which is normally the Sound Mixer (usually supplies all the sound equipment for the production and is responsible for recording all the sounds on set. Actors play a big role in the sound and how it is portrayed. Also Wild Sound (any extra lines that are said or made without the camera rolling that can be added in postproduction. Room Tone (the atmosphere within a space filled with silent actors, crew, and set dressing. This helps the sound editors make the world feel authentic and consistent.  Second in command on set is the Boom Operator (working to capture sound from everyone and everything in each scene). Larger productions might have utility sound technician.
Silent Movie Sound Task: This very short film obviously emphasizes the idea of how effective and important clear and direct sound can make a film and really give it life and meaning. The noises of him walking around, crumpling up the paper, the horse breathing, and the carriage moving around is very distinct and clear.
Original Silent Film
My Silent Film
The process making this film was a lot more complex than I thought. First I had to use ClipGrab which is an app I've never used before the allows you to insert clips from youtube or anything you want in order for me to get the original silent clip film itself. From there I had to detach the audio from the film and begin to insert my own sound effects, in which I got most of mine from youtube. It was difficult finding the right type of sounds for all the different scene, especially the horse noises. Once I got the sound I wanted into final cut I would ditch the audio and being to cut what noise exactly I wanted and that fit well. Additionally, by the help of Egan, I was able to customize the speed of the sounds that I imported so that it matched the way the actors in the film were moving. Once finished I got to choose the background "silent film music" and "ambient noise" and getting to watch the film come together in the end I was actually very proud and impressed I was able to create that finished product that wasn't too bad! This process took a lot of time and patience but overall this was an extremely helpful skill to learn and I look forward to implementing these skills and techniques into my future films.
